Bishop’s residence — on the way to the walls

When you walk from the square toward the walls, you pass a large sober building with a tower. It looks like an office and is one — only it was not built by those who sit in it, and neither of them paid for it. The town paid, monks built it, and a bishop moved in because the emperor decided so. The most interesting thing about it is what is missing from it.

The Bishop’s Residence is the seat of the České Budějovice bishop, a large building with a tower on the way from the square to the walls — only the bishops neither built nor paid for it, and for a Baroque palace it is strikingly bare. Why was decided by one sentence in an imperial decree of 1785 — the story below also tells who paid for the building and for whom it was really built.

Today the České Budějovice diocese, created in 1785, is run from the building. In area it is larger than the whole South Bohemian Region: twelve and a half thousand square kilometres and over two hundred and forty parishes. In 2018 to 2021 the building underwent its first major repair since 1900 and cost one hundred and twenty-six million crowns.

The public cannot go inside; it is an office. So it is a stop along the way, from outside. The turn to the best-preserved stretch of Budějovice walls with Železná panna takes two minutes from here.

In 1761 a foundation brought the first four Piarist friars; the town put up twelve thousand gulden because it wanted a school. Inside the walls there was no free plot. The sober building with a tower that you pass toward the fortifications was paid for by the town, built by the monks, and occupied by a bishop because the emperor so ordered.

What is most interesting is what is missing: for high Baroque the façade is almost bare — no projecting columns, no ornate central pediment, no clock, no vases. That restraint is part of the brief. Walk past it on the way to the walls and notice the absences as much as the tower.

On site

Look at the façade and find what is not there. No columns projecting from the wall, no decorated central pediment, no clock, no vases, a completely plain tower. For high Baroque it is bare — and that is because the emperor…

Questions

Dostali piaristé za budovu náhradu?

Nevíme. Žádný z dostupných pramenů o náhradě nemluví — což ale neznamená, že žádná nebyla. Prameny popisují, co se stalo, ne jak se to vyrovnalo.
