Dimitrij Kadrnožka

Dimitrij Kadrnožka (1923–2022)

In the five VIVIEN apartments in České Budějovice, the art grows from the work of academic painter Dimitrij Kadrnožka — a painter whose works hung at EXPO in Montreal beside Henri Matisse and who, at Fidel Castro's invitation, founded and led the National School of Fine Arts in Havana. In 2014 he had an exhibition in České Budějovice itself. His work informs the ceilings, walls and bathrooms throughout the house.

He was born in Kroměříž; his father was a legionary and a hero of Zborov. He studied at the Prague School of Applied Arts and scenography at AMU. He first went to Paris on a residency in 1947 and returned there throughout his life.

Seven years in Cuba transformed his work — from a landscape painter he became a painter on the border of sign, expression and abstraction. He belonged to Freemasons of the French branch. Besides paintings he created hundreds of film posters and three collections of his own poetry.

A long personal bond ties him to the Tomek family — Pravoslav Tomek's father organised his exhibitions and knew the painter personally. Pravoslav visited him as a child and later. That is also where much of the art you see in the VIVIEN apartments comes from.

“I am a realist — I arrive somewhere and the first feelings act on me, a scent for example — and I work in that sense, so what I do not know, I do not paint.”

Where you find the art

Three layers in every apartment

In concrete terms it looks like this — in three places, each time differently.

LED-backlit ceiling with a golden wing motif
01 · Ceilings

Light above you

LED-backlit stretch ceilings carry original compositions inspired by Kadrnožka’s work — colour-matched precisely to the one room they hang above.

02 · Walls

Close to the original

Reproductions of Kadrnožka’s paintings, enlarged to the maximum the space can hold — sometimes gently retuned to the room, elsewhere left in their original strength.

A gallery in the shower

One bold large-format painting as a full shower wall. Strongest in Evening Elegance — a blue-and-gold motif from ceiling to shower.

Development studio

How the ceiling was made

From a photo in Kadrnožka's studio through dozens of variants to the result above the bed — the development studio of the ceiling image. It took about a year. It shows best on one concrete composition: the one that now glows in the Golden Balance apartment.

A photo from the studio

In Kadrnožka's Prague studio, Pravoslav Tomek photographed a painting that caught his eye. A few years later it became the basis of the ceiling in Golden Balance.

Months of searching followed. Early versions looked completely different from today's, and there were a great many of them. Variants were also made with AI tools and then reworked again and again. The trio of images below comes from the end of that path — by then the versions differed only in colour tuning and small composition details.
