Doudleby

Doudleby is an unassuming village on the Malše twelve kilometres from České Budějovice — and it was the administrative centre of South Bohemia at a time when Budějovice did not yet exist. A Slavic hillfort stood here that belonged directly to the Přemyslid princes and governed the whole region until the end of the 12th century. Today the church of St Vincent stands on its site and the ramparts are still visible in the terrain.

Doudleby is an unassuming village on the Malše twelve kilometres from Budějovice — and it was the administrative centre of South Bohemia at a time when Budějovice did not yet exist. A Slavic hillfort stood here that belonged directly to the Přemyslid princes and governed the region until the end of the 12th century.

On its site today stands the church of St Vincent, and around it the ramparts are still visible in the terrain, with waymarking signs leading to them. In the church wall paintings from after 1350 survive, best of all the Adoration of the Magi, and above the door to the sacristy two intertwined winged dragons. There is also a copy of the Doudleby Madonna; the original from around 1440 hangs in the National Gallery in Prague.

The church also has one living tradition: between Palm Sunday and Good Friday a roughly four-metre Holy Sepulchre has been set up in it without a break since 1883. Outside services it is usually closed, but the ramparts are accessible any time.

A place that mattered before Budějovice existed

Linked to the Doudlebi tribe, Doudleby was an ancient administrative centre of South Bohemia until the end of the 12th century. České Budějovice was founded only in 1265.

What remains of the hillfort

An area of about 60 × 200 metres under and around the church of St Vincent. Walk the slopes and read the ramparts in the ground — especially the eastern outer bank. The west was stronger (three banks); the asymmetry is still visible if you look for it.

On site

The most interesting thing is done on foot: walk round the little hill with the church and look for ramparts in the terrain. The eastern outer rampart is still clear and shows that the fortification was not the same all round — on the west there were three ramparts, on the east…

Questions
