Eliáš inheritance adit (Úsilné)
The Eliáš inheritance adit in Úsilné is a three-kilometre passage under the village, begun on 20 July 1574 to drain flooded silver mines near Rudolfov. It did not save them — it was finished just as mining was already declining. Three and a half centuries later, though, drinking water ran through it into České Budějovice. The first 350 metres can be walked with a guide, by telephone appointment.
The Eliáš Inheritance Adit in Úsilné, ten minutes by car from Budějovice, is a passage under the village that miners began digging in 1574 to drain the flooded silver mines by Rudolfov. It was dug for almost two hundred years — and it did not save the mines. Another town later drank from it, though.
It has been open to the public since 2009, and with a guide you can walk roughly four hundred metres. You go on narrow paths just above flowing water, in places as much as eighteen metres below road level, and on the walls grow stalactites and fine curtain formations. Unlike most caves, you may touch them, only not break them; according to guide František Šebesta the oldest are over two hundred years old.
It is the only preserved and accessible adit from the whole Rudolfov mining district, as Jiří Malšovský of the Mining Museum in Rudolfov says. For a tour you need to book by phone in advance.
Why the Eliáš adit was dug for two hundred years
The Rudolfov mines had always had one main problem: groundwater. At first it was hauled up in leather bags by horse-powered gear, but the output was not enough. When pumping lost, the only solution that worked long-term was an inheritance adit — a gently graded tunnel that lets water run out by itself.
Work began on 20 July 1574. The adit did not save the mines; it was finished as mining was already fading. Three and a half centuries later, though, drinking water for České Budějovice ran through parts of it.
Water no one had to pump
That is the point of an inheritance adit: once driven, water drains without continuous human power. The cost is time — generations of cutting through rock by hand.
How explorers entered the walled-up adit
Later researchers found sections sealed and unstable. Today the first 350 metres can be walked with a guide by prior telephone arrangement; beyond the fourth ventilation shaft you do not go. In the walls the marks of hand work remain readable — a direct trace of the people who cut it.

The tour leads under the built-up part of the village to the fourth ventilation shaft and goes no further — and will not: in the explored stretches the ground is unstable, with faults and collapses. In the walls the marks of hand work are clearly readable.

- Nejstarší zpráva o dolování u Rudolfova je z roku 1385; odhaduje se, že se v revíru vytěžilo až padesát tun stříbra, nejvíc mezi lety 1547 a 1618.
- Ražba štoly zahájena 20. 7. 1574, trvala s přestávkami zhruba 200 let.
- Plánovaná délka kolem 3 km (zdokumentováno 1 562 m), hloubka 25–30 m pod povrchem, přes 16 větracích šachet.
- Po roce 1930 podchyceno 9 l/s pitné vody, svedeno potrubím o průměru 200 mm do vodojemu u Vodárenské věže. Konec využívání 1978 (Římov).
