Observatory and planetarium České Budějovice

The observatory and planetarium in České Budějovice stand in Háječek park by the river and grew from a public collection organised in the 1920s by a group of amateur astronomers — no patron, only membership fees and gifts. It opened on 14 November 1937 as the second public observatory in Bohemia after Ondřejov, and until the mid-1950s was run purely by volunteers. Today a 1961 Zeiss projector still works after more than sixty years, and the institution has a second, harder-to-reach workplace high on Kleť, where a married couple of astronomers discovered over a thousand asteroids.

The observatory and planetarium in Háječek park by the river, a quarter of an hour’s walk from the square, is the second-oldest public observatory in Bohemia — and no one ordered it. A group of amateur astronomers built it from a public collection, without a single major patron.

People come for specific shows, morning, afternoon and evening. Since 2019 the planetarium has digital projection over the whole dome, under which forty-eight spectators fit: it projects the sky, constellations, images from space and whole films. The observatory kept the original 1961 Zeiss instrument and still runs it sometimes. Director Jana Tichá said of it: “We are proud of it and keep it both for its historic value and for its technical merits.”

When it is clear you look through the telescope from the dome at the Sun or Moon, and for the youngest children there are fairy tales in the programme. The observatory also has a second workplace high on Kleť, where asteroids are discovered.

How an observatory no one ordered came to be

In the 1920s amateur astronomers raised a public collection — membership fees and gifts, no single patron. On 14 November 1937 the observatory opened as the second public one in Bohemia after Ondřejov. Until the mid-1950s volunteers ran it.

An extension from another era and a film that may have come alive in it

The Functionalist core holds the telescope dome; beside it the cylindrical planetarium with Jan Halla’s sgraffito. Inside, a 1961 Zeiss projector still works after sixty-plus years. The institution’s second workplace is high on Kleť — see that chapter for the asteroid hunters.

The dome with the telescope sits on the original Functionalist building of the 1930s; the cylindrical planetarium extension with Jan Halla’s astronomical sgraffito grows beside it. The garden around was originally planted as a botanical…
