South Bohemian Museum

The museum was founded in 1877 from gifts by ordinary townspeople and today holds over 800,000 objects in its collections — of which you see only a fraction. In the moldavite case lies green glass that flew into South Bohemia from Bavaria: molten rock blasted into the stratosphere by a meteorite impact nearly fifteen million years ago.

The South Bohemian Museum is the regional museum on Dukelská Street, ten minutes’ walk from the square, with the nature of South Bohemia from a mammoth tooth to moldavites and the story of Budějovice from its founding. In one showcase lies a coin of silver mined a few kilometres from town, and a little further on you walk a floor that the town’s founder himself may have walked.

The collections hold over eight hundred thousand objects and only a small part is on display, in two large exhibitions. On the second floor are nature, archaeology and ethnography of South Bohemia. Director František Štangl names among the rarities a mammoth bone and tooth or ammonites, and there is also a stuffed elk — “an animal most of us never meet, yet it is part of South Bohemian nature”. The ethnographic section won the national museum competition Gloria Musealis.

The second exhibition, The Story of the Town, runs from the earliest finds to the 20th century: Romanesque mail armour, pharmacy bottles for leeches, Hardtmuth ceramics and coins from the Budějovice mint. The building itself has stood since 1903 and until 1965 was so tightly hemmed in by barracks that it could not even be photographed from the front.

A museum that grew from gifts

The first collections opened to the public in spring 1877 in the House at the Three Crowns beside the town hall, made up of gifts from local residents and compatriots living abroad. Gifts arrived so fast that a building was needed — the monumental Neo-Renaissance structure on today’s Dukelská street rose in 1899–1901 and opened to the public soon after.

Moldavites: green glass that fell from the sky

In the cases lie moldavites — green glass of twisted shapes. They are not local stone in the usual sense: molten rock was blasted into the stratosphere by a meteorite impact in Bavaria nearly fifteen million years ago and fell across South Bohemia. That green glass is one of the museum’s most visited displays.

Emil Holub and four hundred gold coins

The African explorer Emil Holub left the museum a gift of four hundred gold coins — and a collection that still anchors the ethnographic rooms. Holub’s link to Budějovice is part of why the museum feels less like a provincial cabinet and more like a window on the wider world.

Eight hundred thousand objects — and what you actually see

The holdings exceed 800,000 items. On display is only a fraction. That is normal for museums of this size; what changes the visit is knowing that the rest is not “missing” but stored, studied and occasionally rotated.

Why silver mining stopped when the town could mint its own money

Budějovice once minted its own silver coins. The mint stood on Piaristické náměstí. Why the silver from Rudolfov stopped flowing, and how the town’s mint fits that story, is one of the threads that also runs through the Rudolfov and Eliáš adit chapters.

A shard that pushed the town’s history back four thousand years

Among the archaeological finds are pieces that rewrote how old human presence around the confluence is — including a shard that moved the timeline back by millennia. Next to them sit objects even the archaeologists cannot yet name with certainty.

In the case: a floor from a church that no longer exists

One display preserves flooring from a church that is gone. You are looking at a surface people once walked on in a sacred space that no longer stands — a quiet reminder that the museum is not only about what survived above ground.

On site

In the cases lie moldavites — green glass of twisted shapes. Further on, silver coins the town minted itself in the mint on Piaristické náměstí, a few steps from Solnice you may already have passed. And in the middle a floor from a church that no longer exists.
