Lanna’s trace — avenue, monument and boatyard

The street you take from the station into the centre is named after a man born in a boatyard who began as an oarsman in his father’s firm. From it he built an operation that in one year dispatched three hundred and fifty boats — and when the railway came, he did not resist it. He folded it into his system and had freight hauled to the river on it.

Lannova Avenue is the street you take from the station into the centre of Budějovice, and it bears the name of Vojtěch Lanna — a boy from the Budějovice shipyard who began as a rower in his father’s business and ended as one of the men who built railways, bridges and ironworks in Bohemia.

Three traces of Lanna remain here. The avenue runs from the station to Na Sadech park and was built for the way into town: after the new station opened in 1908 it became the main link with the town and a representative shopping street. At its end in the park stands Lanna’s monument of 1879. After the war it was torn down and only returned to its place in 1993.

On the other bank of the Vltava, in Čtyři Dvory, is Lanna’s shipyard. Boats were built here from 1550, and in Lanna’s time hundreds left each year. Today the site is a cultural monument; a children’s and youth centre and a bistro are based there, and by the water is a public landing. And you meet Lanna’s name in Prague too: his firm built the first stone embankment, today’s Smetana Embankment, and took part in the Karlín Viaduct, which for sixty years was the longest bridge in Europe.

After the new Budějovice station opened in 1908, Lannova třída became the fastest link from station to centre. It was built to walk into town on — not Rudolfovská.

Vojtěch Lanna was born on 23 April 1805, not into an office but as a labourer, then an oarsman in his father’s boatyard. He built an operation that in one year sent out 350 boats. When the railway arrived he did not fight it; he folded it into his system and had freight brought to the river on it.

The monument in Na Sadech (1879, Pönninger) was removed after the war and restored in 1993. The avenue still does what it was meant to: carry you from the trains to the historic core.

The monument in Na Sadech park — unveiled in 1879, by Vienna sculptor Franz Xaver Pönninger. It has its own second story: after the war it was torn down and only re-unveiled in 1993. Walk Lannova třída from the station to the centre…
