Vrbenské ponds
Vrbenské ponds are a nature reserve on the north-western edge of České Budějovice that you can reach by city transport — and 193 bird species have been recorded there, of which more than eighty nest. A four-kilometre educational trail with ten stops runs along the dikes. According to observers the birds here are less shy than elsewhere, so they can be watched from closer than usual.
Vrbenské ponds are a nature reserve with four large ponds right on the north-western edge of Budějovice that you can reach by city transport — and on an islet of one of them nest Eurasian spoonbills, rare birds with spoon-shaped bills — their only colony in Bohemia.
One hundred and ninety-three bird species have been recorded here and more than eighty of them nest. On the islet of Nový Vrbenský pond live ten to fifteen pairs of spoonbills, a hundred to a hundred and fifty pairs of night herons and several pairs of little egrets. Ornithologist Jan Havlíček describes how spoonbills hunt: “They scoop up water with it, swing their heads from side to side and catch various small invertebrates or smaller fish.” It is liveliest from spring to summer; in winter goosanders arrive.
A four-kilometre educational trail with ten stops runs along the dikes, and according to observers the birds here let themselves be watched from closer than elsewhere. Anyone who wants to know what awaits can look at the islet beforehand: Czech Radio has webcams here.
Why exactly 193 bird species here
Four large ponds, varied littoral, and a trail on the dikes put you beside the water for four kilometres. Observers note that birds here are less shy than at other sites — including spoonbills among the more striking visitors. Come by city bus; bring binoculars; walk the ten stops slowly.
On site
The trail runs on the dikes, so you stay by the water with views over the surface and into the littoral — where most birds are. Ten panels introduce species and habitat types. You can compare the four ponds…
Questions
Kdo chce hlavně krajinu a klid, má v okolí lepší cíle.
