Zátka House — the bust on Krajinská
On a house on Krajinská is a bust of a man who spent eight years trying to negotiate peace between Czechs and Germans in one town. The agreement was approved in May 1914. Three months later the war began and it was worthless. The bust is by Bohumil Kafka — the same sculptor who made Žižka on Vítkov.
On the house in Krajinská Street where August Zátka was born in 1847 stands his bust — the man who led the Czech half of Budějovice and then for eight years negotiated peace with the German half. In February 1914 the town council accepted it unanimously — and yet nothing ever came of it. Why is told in the story further on.
At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries Budějovice was two parallel societies in one town, Czech and German, each with its own schools, clubs, businesses and banks. Zátka, a lawyer and from 1878 a deputy in the provincial diet, was the leader of the Czech side: he founded Czech schools, in 1893 with Leopold Hajíček an enamel works, and in 1895 stood at the birth of the brewery that is today’s Budvar.
The bust was made by Bohumil Kafka, author of the huge equestrian statue of Jan Žižka on Prague’s Vítkov, and was unveiled in 1927 for Zátka’s eightieth birthday. The house stands right on the way from the square to Masné krámy and today holds a hotel with a restaurant. A stop by the bust, including reading the inscription, takes two minutes.
There were two parallel societies in one town. August Zátka (1847–1935) could have played his role simply by pushing for his own side. On 12 November 1906 he presented Mayor Josef Taschek a memorial written in German — so the other side would read it as an offer, not a demand. Three provincial laws and years of talks followed. In May 1914 an agreement was approved. Three months later the war began and it was worthless.
The bust on Krajinská is by Bohumil Kafka, sculptor of Žižka on Vítkov. Read the inscription; then walk on knowing the peace he sought lasted less than a summer.
On site
The bust is on the façade — read the inscription under it. It gives the birth date and the house where it happened. Notice the sculptor. Bohumil Kafka is the author of the equestrian statue of Jan Žižka on Vítkov, one of the largest bronze statues in the world.
