Trocnov — Jan Žižka memorial

Trocnov is linked to the birth of Jan Žižka and today offers much more than the memorial alone. Since spring 2026 a new visitor centre with a museum exhibition makes it a worthwhile standalone history trip.
Trocnov near Borovany is where Jan Žižka of Trocnov was traditionally born — the Hussite commander never defeated in battle. A granite monument stands here, two archaeologically exposed farmsteads, an educational trail and from 25 April 2026 a new visitor centre with free entry. Much about Žižka remains unknown: his birth year is unknown and historians still dispute whether the man in the oldest document with his name was he or his father.

The site is open ground with forest, two exposed farmstead foundations — layout of buildings, cellar and hearth visible, so you can walk and compare sizes. That is something to check on site: 9 × 12 metres versus 6.5 × 5.5 metres reads clearly on the foundations. The granite monument to Jan Žižka dominates. An educational trail links the points and is accessible off-season when the museum is closed. The archeoskanzen has reconstructions of period buildings — the shape of what beside it you see only as outlines in the ground; both together are the best part of the visit.
