Jihočeské muzeum is a good choice on a day when the weather is not kind to walking. It was founded in 1877 from gifts by local people and today holds over 800,000 objects — including moldavites formed when a meteorite struck in what is now Bavaria and ejected material as far as South Bohemia.
The museum was founded in 1877 from gifts by ordinary townspeople and today has over 800,000 items in its collections — only a fraction on display. In the moldavite case lies green glass that flew into South Bohemia from Bavaria: molten rock hurled into the stratosphere when a meteorite hit less than fifteen million years ago.

In the cases lie moldavites — green glass in twisted shapes. Further on are silver coins the town minted itself in the mint on Piaristické náměstí, a few steps from the Solnice you walked past. And a decorated medieval Gothic floor from the church of St Nicholas: you will not see it in the cathedral itself, because the Gothic interior was lost in the fire of 1641.
